Abandoned dogs tied to trees are a common sight for rescuers, but the state of Max the Pit Bull was unlike any they had ever seen. The poor dog was bound so tightly to the tree that he couldn’t move his head, and he had been left without food or water for an extended period of time. Fortunately, Max caught the attention of concerned individuals, and they quickly alerted Kerry Haney, a dedicated animal rescuer with Don’t Bully Us Rescue based in New Jersey.

Haney was at home when she received a flood of calls and messages regarding Max’s dire situation. She quickly sprang into action, racing to the scene in her pajamas to see if she could speak with the family and provide assistance. However, she was unable to locate the dog and had to enlist the help of the Woolwich Township Police Department.

It took a few days to rescue Max from his terrible situation, but eventually, Haney was able to retrieve him and transport him to the Gloucester County Animal Shelter. Sadly, Max tested positive for heartworm and didn’t fare well on his behavioral exams, but Don’t Bully Us Rescue is committed to helping him recover. At 20 months old, Max is house-trained, crate-trained, and undergoing personalized training with a professional dog trainer, in addition to receiving treatment for his heartworm.

Despite the poor dog’s past, Haney says that Max is a playful pup at heart and gets along well with her other dogs. He loves people, especially kids, and needs a loving, active family to give him the attention he deserves.
