Such was the remarkable story of a lost dog, whose extended time away from home concluded in a dramatic rescue from five feet of snow.

The dog, named Russ, had gone missing back in August. Russ belonged to a traveling nurse who had come to Tahoe for work. Unfortunately, Russ ran off from the vehicle, and the owner had to evacuate the area due to a raging fire, leaving Russ behind. At that point, it seemed that Russ was lost for good, as reported by the Tahoe PAWS.

However, months later, a surprising turn of events unfolded. On December 16, Wendy Jones, the director of Tahoe PAWS, received word of a dog trapped in the snow, unable to move. The dog’s dire situation was compounded by the five-foot-deep snow and treacherous terrain, making it impossible for anyone to reach him.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, a team of rescuers courageously geared up and set out to save Russ, braving the harsh winter conditions. Wendy Jones enlisted the help of TLC 4 Furry Friends & Tahoe PAWS volunteers, who equipped themselves with snowshoes, specialized dog rescue gear, and a sled provided by Officer Shumaker. After tracking the dog up the mountain, they eventually found him beneath a tree, appearing lifeless. However, to their immense relief, the dog was still alive, as he opened his eyes.

Leona Allen, a volunteer with Tahoe PAWS, vividly recalled the moment: “I followed the tracks and all of a sudden saw this dark shape under the tree and thought this isn’t good; he’s not moving, and thought to get really nervous and really upset. And then he opened his eyes, and I’m pretty sure I screamed.”

“Dogs are strong and intelligent,” Wendy Jones explained. “They can survive for an extended period. We didn’t know the exact circumstances of this dog or how long he’d been out there.” The team placed Russ on a sled and kept him warm as they carefully made their way back through the challenging snowy terrain to safety.

After a thorough examination by a veterinarian, a microchip revealed that the dog was indeed Russ, and the volunteers discovered that the rescued dog had been missing for months. Russ and his owner were joyfully reunited, with the owner overjoyed to learn that his beloved pet was alive, as noted by Tahoe PAWS.

This heartwarming reunion, made possible by a daring and dramatic rescue operation, couldn’t have come at a better time, aligning with the holiday season. Elsa Gaule, a volunteer, expressed her sentiments, saying, “It’s so heartwarming, especially around the holidays and the end of the year. And then just to have this really happy ending and to be able to be a part of that was pretty special.”

For the volunteers involved, this rescue mission will be an experience they cherish for a long time. Leona Allen, reflecting on the event, stated, “As a rescue organization, this is what we’re supposed to do. I’ve worked on some pretty challenging rescues, and this is probably at the top.”

She added, “I keep reliving the moment when he opened his eyes and lifted his head, and just the joy and elation inside of me was overwhelming. It’s one more life that gets to live happy and warm and safe.” The rescue team’s dedication and bravery in navigating deep snow to save Russ’s life are truly commendable, and it’s a heartwarming ending to know that this dog is now back home, safe and sound. Their efforts are greatly appreciated.
