A sickly dog, who endured a brutal attack by other canines, resulting in the loss of his nose, is in desperate need of a loving home. Thanks to a local news story, his prospects for finding a forever family have dramatically improved.
This resilient dog, known as Sniffles, had a challenging life in Puerto Rico, where he was abandoned and fell victim to attacks by stray dogs. Consequently, he suffered from a multitude of health issues.
Upon receiving medical attention in the United States, thanks to a Florida-based animal rescue group that shared his story, Sniffles’ condition has started to improve, and the possibility of finding him a permanent home is on the horizon.
During his time in Puerto Rico, Sniffles lived in deplorable conditions, contracting various parasites, including hookworms and whipworms. Additionally, he needed urgent dental care. Tragically, he lost his nose due to an attack by other stray dogs, which left him with multiple injuries and ailments.
Initially adopted by a family in the US, Sniffles’ placement was short-lived as he frequently ran away, requiring constant medical attention. This made him even more vulnerable. Eventually, he found his way to Poodle and Pooch Rescue in Florida, a volunteer organization that rescues hundreds of dogs annually.
Sniffles became a part of the rescue on December 19, and the dedicated team immediately began their efforts to secure him a loving home. His story was featured on WESH, an Orlando news station, on December 24, which significantly boosted his chances of being adopted.
Since then, Sniffles’ fortunes have taken a turn for the better. Over 100 people have contacted the shelter to express their interest in adopting him, and his heartwarming tale continues to touch the hearts of many.
Finding the right home for Sniffles won’t be without its challenges, as he requires a dedicated owner willing to clean his nasal passage twice daily and administer eye drops to treat dry eye. He also needs treatment for parasitic infections, including hookworms and whipworms, as well as a tick-borne disease called Ehrlichia. Despite these health concerns, the shelter remains optimistic that he will make a full recovery.
Remarkably, Sniffles remains affectionate and fond of people. Despite a tough past, he has begun to shed his initial shyness and confusion, revealing his true nature as an affectionate and happy dog. He enjoys snuggling, wags his tail, and interacts well with other dogs, emitting endearing snorting noises due to his condition.
The shelter spokesperson, Rebecca Lynch, emphasizes Sniffles’ unique appearance but also points out that his story is sadly not unique. Many special needs dogs find their way to the rescue every week.
While the rescue explores adoption options for Sniffles, they hope that those who don’t choose to bring him into their homes will consider adopting or fostering other special needs pets.
In the meantime, a kind-hearted woman named Genesis Diaz has been providing temporary foster care for Sniffles. She shared a heartwarming moment when Sniffles greeted her with enthusiasm and affection. The animal rescue workers are equally captivated by his spirit and resilience.
