When Mama Pickles was discovered alone in early September, her condition left no room for doubt – she needed urgent assistance. This 2-year-old pregnant pit bull had been abandoned, prompting animal control officers to swiftly intervene and inquire about her origins. Contact was established with her previous owners, who, unfortunately, no longer wanted her and chose to surrender her to a shelter.
Mama Pickles, in her advanced state of pregnancy, required specialized care beyond what the shelter could offer. Fortunately, Pits & Giggles Rescue, an organization specializing in the care of pregnant and nursing mother dogs and their puppies, came to her rescue. This sweet pit bull exhibited immense enthusiasm upon meeting her new rescue companions, showering them with affection and kisses. Despite her cumbersome belly, her zest for life remained undiminished.
Lauren Casteen Sykes, a volunteer with Pits & Giggles Rescue, and owner of Enchanted Hills Photography, devoted her time to photographing the dogs and puppies at the rescue to facilitate their adoption. Mama Pickles, upon her arrival, immediately stood out as the perfect candidate for a maternity photoshoot – and the results exceeded all expectations.
Sykes recounted the experience, “She was so excited she could hardly sit still. She loves affection and treats and was happy to participate! The hardest part was getting her to stay because she loves people SO much!”
As Sykes tried to pose Mama Pickles, the room was filled with laughter at her diva-like behavior. She struck the fiercest poses imaginable, only to have her awkward belly and playful personality ruin the moment. Sykes described it as “hilarious,” noting, “She is ALL belly and a bit clumsy, so getting her posed was not difficult, but getting her to sit still long enough to get a picture was no easy task! Her bows were crooked, falling off, and tripping her up — we couldn’t help but laugh; she’s such a cartoon!”
Despite these entertaining challenges, Sykes managed to capture some incredibly charming photographs of the proud mother-to-be. Everyone was delighted that Mama Pickles was finally receiving the love and recognition she so rightfully deserved.
Sykes complimented her, saying, “She’s quite the model. Her legs are certainly too short for the runway, but she was really loving all the attention and affection.”
With the photoshoot concluded, all that remained was to await the arrival of Mama Pickles’ offspring, and the wait wasn’t long. Over the weekend, Mama Pickles gave birth to eight healthy puppies, all wonderful little girls, just like their mother.
After allowing Mama Pickles and her puppies some well-deserved rest, the rescue decided it was only fitting to conduct a newborn photoshoot as a follow-up to the initial one. This time, Mama Pickles posed proudly alongside her adorable puppies. She was already an outstanding mother, ensuring the safety and well-being of her baby girls at every step of the way, earning the admiration of everyone involved.
It will be a few months before Mama Pickles and her puppies are ready for adoption and can find their forever homes. Until then, they will be pampered and cared for by the devoted individuals at the rescue, all of whom are thrilled that Mama Pickles is finally receiving the second chance she deserves.
“This girl was clearly used repeatedly for breeding, and we’re excited to make sure this is her very last litter,” Sykes affirmed.
The maternity photoshoot not only celebrated the forthcoming new life but also served as a poignant reminder that every animal, regardless of their past, has the potential to experience joy, love, and the happiness of being part of a family.
May the story of Mama Pickles and her maternity photoshoot inspire us all to advocate for animals in need, support rescue efforts, and embrace the incredible transformations that can occur when love, compassion, and a second chance are offered to those who need it most.
