Casper came to the rescue of the sheep when a pack of wild creatures approached during a November night. Casper and Daisy were on sheep-watching duty when John Weirville heard coyotes outside his home in Decatur, Dekalb County, Georgia. Weirville is the owner of “Ewe Can Do It Naturally,” a business that rents out flocks of sheep for environmentally friendly vegetation control.
In the middle of the night, Weirville woke up to find his sheep cornered against a fence, with Daisy keeping a watchful eye on them. Meanwhile, Casper had his sights on the approaching coyote pack. As the coyotes closed in, Casper wasted no time.
Weirville recalled, “I could see the coyotes running around in this area,” pointing to a part of his yard. “When I came over here, Casper took off.”
Casper valiantly faced off against the coyotes for about half an hour, managing to eliminate eight of them before chasing the rest away, albeit at a cost. Remarkably, the sheep emerged unscathed, but Casper was not as fortunate.
Weirville, his family, and concerned neighbors launched a search for Casper, finding bits of his tail and a blood trail but no sign of the dog. Their worst fears loomed until Casper unexpectedly reappeared at home two days later, huddled in the chicken hutch.
Weirville said, “He looked like he’d been through the worst.” “When he got home, he just looked at me as if to say, ‘Boss, don’t dwell on how terrible I look; just take care of me.'”
Casper was subsequently taken to the Lifeline Animal Project, where he has been residing for the past month. He was in such dire condition that veterinarians were uncertain if he would survive, but he pulled through multiple surgeries, and his wounds are now healing.
The veterinary facility generously provided their services, but it will take several months for Casper to make a complete recovery. Nonetheless, Weirville is overjoyed by Casper’s progress, and he recently had the chance to reunite with his heroic companion.
He expressed, “I can’t put into words how happy I am to see him,” as he hugged Casper tightly. Initially fearing the worst when he first saw Casper’s injuries, Weirville now believes that Casper will be back with him in no time.
