Introducing Benny, the resourceful Labrador rescue whose heartwarming ice skating journey has taken the world by storm, all thanks to his former professional figure skater owner, Cheryl Delsangro.
At the age of 60, Cheryl uncovered Benny’s extraordinary talent and his deep passion for ice skating, a skill she herself had mastered professionally. Not only did Cheryl teach the adorable nine-year-old Benny how to glide on ice, but she also crafted specially designed skates just for him.
Captured through the lens of family friend Rick Vierkandt, Benny can be seen happily cruising around the rink, radiating sheer delight.
This incredible journey began when Cheryl noticed Benny’s boundless excitement while romping on the ice.
Cheryl reminisces, “We were asked to create a cheer video for the Vegas Golden Knights, a professional ice hockey team, when they reached the Stanley Cup finals. I took Benny onto the ice on his paws, and he chased the puck and carried the stick for the video – he had an absolute blast.”
Benny takes to the ice approximately once every two weeks, or even more frequently for special events. Cheryl’s innovative skates, a product of her own design and crafted by a friend, have turned Benny into a sensation on the ice.
Cheryl’s happiness in sharing the ice with Benny is palpable. She states, “Watching his excitement and skating with him is a dream come true. I always say my two greatest passions are dogs and skating – now I have combined them. It couldn’t get any better.”
Benny’s presence on the ice exudes infectious enthusiasm, bringing smiles to all who witness his remarkable skills. Cheryl believes that Benny’s unique journey shines a spotlight on the potential of rescue dogs when given the opportunity.
Cheryl also reveals Benny’s challenging beginnings, as he started life in a rescue shelter. She considers him a living testament to the incredible potential of rescue dogs when they are given a chance. “I just want to introduce Benny to the world because he is the poster pup for ‘adopt, don’t shop.’ Benny was on his last day in a high-kill shelter when I found him and had him rescued. He is a perfect example of what’s available in dog shelters and through rescue organizations.”
