Takis Proestakis may not have the same financial prosperity as he did in the past, but he is living a happier and more fulfilling life. He has rescued hundreds of stray dogs from the streets around Crete, a Greek island, and provided them with a safe haven filled with love and care.
During the financial crisis in Greece, many families were forced to give up their pets. Unfortunately, instead of finding new homes or taking them to shelters, many people chose to abandon them. Some were even left at garbage dumps or simply left to wander the streets.
Someone Had to Act
One day, while visiting a dump site, Takis was horrified to see dozens of skinny dogs, some with terrible injuries. He noticed that more dogs were being abandoned there every day because their owners could no longer afford to feed them or provide veterinary care.
Takis felt compelled to do something to help and decided to bring every single dog he saw to his home. As he continued rescuing more dogs, his house soon became too crowded, leading him to purchase a plot of land in an olive grove where he could create his own shelter. And so, Taki’s Shelter was born.
This land not only became a home for the dogs, but also for Taki himself. He acquired a shipping container and converted it into a living space, not only for himself, but also for the dogs that needed special care and time to heal before joining the rest of the canine residents.
