Joey, our two-legged hero, was born without his front legs on Christmas Eve. Unfortunately, his birth family wasn’t equipped to care for him due to his condition, making it a challenge for Joey to find a loving home in his native Connecticut. While his littermates found forever homes, Joey remained the odd pup.

Little did he know that a remarkable twist of fate awaited him!

Joey’s story quickly touched the hearts of animal lovers everywhere and soon caught the attention of Vintage Pet Rescue in Foster, Rhode Island. Despite specializing in rescuing senior dogs, the rescue couldn’t resist Joey’s vibrant personality and welcomed him into their family in July.

Unfazed by his physical limitations, Joey refused to let anything dampen his spirit. With the assistance of a custom-built wheelchair that he wasn’t particularly fond of, he swiftly adapted to moving on his two legs.

As Joey’s story spread far and wide, it drew the interest of a compassionate couple from Tiverton, Rhode Island. Enchanted by his endearing hopping, they knew they had to make Joey a part of their lives. In no time, Joey found his forever home.

Joey was adopted by Cathy Larson and her wife, Laurie Thibodeau, through Vintage Pet Rescue, joining their pack of five lovely dogs. Originally named Christmas, his new caretakers gave him the name “Joey” after witnessing his unique mode of movement.

Despite having a specially designed wheelchair, Joey preferred using his hind legs to hop, resembling a tiny kangaroo. This adorable trait earned him the fitting nickname “Joey.” While the wheelchair was used for feeding, he became as still as a statue whenever they placed him in it.

Larson and Thibodeau hoped that Joey and their three-legged dog, Murphy, would become best buddies—and their wish came true. Joey and Murphy formed an inseparable bond, constantly playing and keeping each other company. Additionally, Joey struck up a heartwarming friendship with Shady, a 14-year-old blind dog also residing in their Tiverton home. From the beginning, it was evident that Joey had found his perfect match.

Adapting seamlessly to his new family and canine siblings, Joey harbored even bigger dreams.
