When a concerned supporter contacted us about a dog that had tragically been struck by a vehicle on the highway, we knew immediate action was imperative. We dropped everything and hurried to the scene, determined to assist this injured canine. What we encountered was a heart-wrenching situation that would leave a lasting impact on us.
We named her Astro due to her distinctive appearance. She was discovered on the highway, part of a group of stray dogs, with a habit of crossing the road. Both of her hind legs were immobile, leaving her to drag herself along. Her body bore numerous abrasions, a painful result of her struggle on the unforgiving pavement. Additionally, we noticed bloody discharge, a sign of a tragic miscarriage resulting from the accident.
Astro’s injuries were serious, necessitating urgent medical attention. X-rays, ultrasounds, and possibly surgery were required to evaluate and address her condition. However, gaining Astro’s trust was essential to ensure a calm and stress-free examination process. With patience and care, we established a bond with Astro, enabling us to transport her to a clinic without any violent struggles or sedation. Throughout the journey, Astro found comfort in resting her head on her caregiver’s arm.
Upon reaching the clinic, the extent of Astro’s injuries became more apparent. Her white blood cell count was elevated, indicating a severe infection likely caused by the miscarriage. It was evident that the puppies tragically did not survive, leading to the infection and a spinal fracture. Nevertheless, there was hope as Astro’s body displayed signs of resilience and recovery.
Astro began a course of antibiotics to combat the infection, and fresh bandages were applied to her foot wounds. The dedicated care and the efficacy of the prescribed antibiotics led to significant improvement. Astro’s infection subsided, and subsequent blood tests revealed remarkable progress.
