The dogs typically chosen for police service are known for their imposing presence. They command respect and often serve as a means of intimidating individuals that law enforcement officers need to confront. However, Gavel seems to be quite the opposite. He exudes a friendly and cheerful demeanor, making him an unlikely fit for this role.
This German Shepherd hails from Queensland, Australia, and his journey took an unexpected turn when he was dismissed from the police dog training program due to his overly friendly nature. Fortunately, a new opportunity arose within the same realm. Initially, they were unsure how to make use of Gavel’s unique personality. But after some contemplation, a staff member came up with a brilliant idea. Given his friendly disposition, the dog seemed like a perfect fit for the world of politics.
And so it was done! Today, the playful Gavel holds the esteemed position of Vice-Regal Dog, with a permanent residence at the Government House.
“During the Open Day last weekend, we received numerous comments from people who expressed their delight in following Gavel’s journey from an aspiring police dog to Vice-Regal Dog via social media,” a post on the Facebook page of the Governor of Queensland, Paul de Jersey AC, stated. “The truth is, we at Government House have thoroughly enjoyed sharing his story with all of you!”
Instead of chasing down criminals, this exceedingly friendly dog now warmly welcomes distinguished guests at the Government House.
“He has gone through four ceremonial coats, transitioned into a different career (his official title is now Gavel VRD, ‘Vice-Regal Dog’), and has brought immeasurable joy to the governor, Mrs. de Jersey, Government House staff, and the countless Queenslanders who have visited the estate,” Jersey informed the BBC.
In the end, it appears that Gavel has found his perfect fit in his new role. Even though he hails from a long line of pedigree, suggesting that he should excel as a police dog, Gavel simply yearned to be a regular dog. “We hope that Gavel remains with us for a long, long time in the future,” Jersey mentioned to 7 News Brisbane.
